Why Is Vision Important In Tennis?

You might not have thought about it before, but everything in tennis depends on your vision!

You have to pick up on the subtle changes in your opponent's body position to anticipate their next shot.

You have to be able to quickly read the flight of the ball, so you can prepare in time & set up in the right position for your shot.

You have to be able to judge the speed and spin on the ball as well as precisely how far it is away, so you can start your swing at the right time.

You then have to adjust your swing speed and swing path, relative to the unique flight of the shot coming towards you.

And finally, you have to track the ball through to contact, so you can hit it cleanly and consistently.

Your ability to focus is also completely dependent on how well your visual system works.

When you think of great tennis players, you instinctively think of what incredible athletes they are in terms of speed, fitness, strength and flexibility. What most people don’t think about is how incredible their visual systems are.

It's amazing vision that allows top players to easily return a 120 mph serve that would fly by most normal people before they could even react.

And unfortunately, it works the other way too. Lack of visual skill is the biggest thing preventing most players from improving.

That’s why it’s common for players to practise religiously, spend thousands of dollars on tennis courses, clinics and lessons, but not improve very much at all.

What Problems Are Caused By Lack Of Visual Ability?

Late Preparation

This is less of a problem at higher levels, but at lower levels, this is the number 1 thing holding players back.

In order to hit high quality shots, you need to be ready and set up in position in time.

If you're the sort of player that isn’t preparing until the ball crosses the next. Or worse still, until it’s bouncing on your side of the court. It prevents you from having good timing, which prevents you ever developing high-level technique.

The reason you prepare late obviously isn't because you don’t know how important early preparation is. Every player knows how important it is. You're preparing late because your visual systems simply can’t read where the ball is going quickly enough.

To have good vision, your eyes need to move well. There are 6 muscles that move your eyes in different directions. These muscles are controlled by specific parts of your brain.

There are also multiple different parts of your brain responsible for the visual processing. In fact, there are more parts of your brain involved in processing vision than anything else you do.

Your brain constantly changes through a process called neuroplasticity. It never stays the same, it adapts to what you do.

If you don’t move your eyes though their full range of motion frequently. Or you don't challenge the parts of the brain that process visual information, they get worse over time. This is what happens if you spend too much time on your phone and looking at screens up close.

The opposite is also true. If you constantly move your eyes through different ranges of motion, the quality of your eye movements improve, so that you can track the ball more effectively.

If you challenge the parts of your brain that process visual information, they adapt and improve. Which then makes you into a better tennis player. Just like when you train your cardiovascular system, it adapts and you become a fitter tennis player.
